Neil Island – Shaheed Dweep

Shaheed Dweep, formerly known as Neil Island, is a serene island located approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago. Covering an area of about 18.9 square kilometers, this tranquil destination is renowned for its pristine beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and lush greenery.

History

Originally named after British Brigadier General James Neill, who played a role during the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the island was renamed Shaheed Dweep in December 2018. This renaming was a tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, who, on 30th December 1943, hoisted the Indian flag at Port Blair and declared the Andaman and Nicobar Islands free from British rule. He named Andaman Island as Shaheed and Nicobar Island as Swaraj.
